And Just Like That, It Was Over...

Hello hookers!

We want to thank all of you so much for participating in the Grand Hooker Experiment with us. The project is finally shut down and everyone who asked for help is now matched. We are so overwhelmed and grateful to all of you.

Other than returning a couple of last emails - we are officially done.

So thank you from the bottom of our hearts. And we made you a little video so we could (sort of) thank you in person:

A couple of things you should know:

We know we matched up over 2,100 people but we don't know exactly how many we helped. We grabbed that number based on how we filed the emails we got. But so many people were so generous that they helped 2, 5, 10 or even 20 hookers. So that number could really be much larger.

If you want to buy Helping Hooker t-shirts and other merchandise (100% of the proceeds are going to help mommies in need) you can click HERE.

If you wrote to us offering to donate goods or services, you may not have heard back from us. And here's why:

If you have something you would like to donate, please post it on our Facebook wall between Christmas and New Years. Please allow people to privately message you regarding your donation, as they would prefer to remain anonymous.

So please, the best way to get something you want to donate to someone who needs is to use the fb wall over the next ten days. After the new year, please respect that we'd prefer it not be used as a mommy hooker craig's list type thing. But until then, have at it.

Thanks again for letting us do this.
xo,
Kate & Lydia

  1. The best thing that came out of this has been the raising of awareness of the prevalence of poverty in the US, with the added demonstration of how insufficient are charitable intentions to solve what is a structural problem within our society. Estimates place 100,000,000 US citizens within or nearly within poverty levels; this is one out of three who are poor or near-poor.

These levels cannot be resolved with gift cards but require hard and radical social and political transformations ... the kind that will see an end to our spending more on "defense" than the rest of the world combined, the emergence of a renewed respect for working people, an end to the dominance of corporations in the political sphere, and some moderation of the consumptive culture that has made shopping and having stuff more important than the nurturing of a healthy society.

  2. You suck for making me cry...but I love you both anyway! And I love that you use your RFML pseudonyms. I thank YOU from the bottom of my heart for giving me the opportunity to give. It made my Christmas brighter and more meaningful. And it gave me yet another reason to got to Target.

    Merry Christmas ladies!

  3. This was an amazing experiment, and I'm excited to have been a part of it. Please don't be sad or remorseful or in anyway surprised that one person (that you know of) lied. There were probably more. That's ok. We knew that going into it. A few people on this planet are not great people. But most people really are. This proved it. Nice work, everyone. And thanks to the two of you for making it happen.

  4. Thank you SO much for getting me matched up with someone. I made me and my girls so happy to know that we were able to make someone else's Christmas a little bit brighter.

  5. I know I've already commented on one of the other posts to tell you both how awesome you are and how awesome all the Giving Hookers are (Jen, I'm lookin' at you, girl!), but I just can't stop myself from saying it again. This weekend, I spent every last dime on the incredibly generous Target gift card that I received, and I spent it ALL on my boundlessly amazing daughter, who is herself the best gift in the history of ever. I ended up doing my T-shopping online, because I just KNEW that ugly crying would be involved and I felt it was best to spare other holiday shoppers that very special sight. When it came time to pay for her gifts and I entered in the gift card number... really, I can't even begin to explain the feeling. It was overwhelming and joyous and inspiring and hopeful and made me feel exactly like I do whenever I watch "It's A Wonderful Life" and it's right at the end where Harry Bailey says, "Here's to my brother George, the richest man in town!" -- only this time I was the richest woman in town and it was all because a bunch of hookers came to my rescue. When the whole thing was said and done, I went out to the living room and rang the bell ornament on my tree so that one of heaven's hookers could get her wings. : ) And it's all because of you, Kate & Lydia. Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart. I hope both of you, and everyone who is a part of this incredible community, has the best holiday you've ever had.

  6. @Amy...my husband and I watched 'It's a Wonderful Life' on Saturday night and, while I usually shed one or two tears at the end, this year I was BAWLING. My husband was like, "Uh, you've seen this movie at least 20 times..." And I was all, "Kate, Lydia and I are the richest men in town! Except we're hookers! Or pimps or something!"

Helping you all help each other has been incredibly rewarding. Thank you all for giving me such a wonderful gift this year. Aaaaand now I'm crying again...

  10. Thank you both for doing this project. I am so grateful to you both and my wonderful helping hooker. I wasn't sure how this Christmas was going to be but it warms my otherwise very jaded and cynical heart to know that there are strangers out there that actually care about my family and me.

If my helping hooker reads this:
Thank you so much for making this season a bit less stressful, restoring my faith that there are still good people out there and for that fantastic hat!

  11. I'm ugly crying...again. I want to thank Jennifer & that happy Hooker from somewhere out There for the gifts they provided me. While I was working part time that too ended just this past Friday. Upon returning home in tears from another layoff I received my second card with a second gift card in it. I have used both cards to buy some groceries & a couple of gifts for my 15 month old son. Y'all rock my socks so hard with the generosity that has been shown with this project. THANK YOU!!!!

  12. You guys are beyond adorable....worthy of sloppy adoration...to be adored....adored to little tiny pieces...I wish I lived next door to you.

  13. Lydia, you remind me so much of myself. I am a cryer too. And am crying right now, with my three little ones totally ignoring me because I actually do this a lot.

This project was pure goodness. Thank you to all three of you for working so hard to make so many mommies happy. It is amazing to think of all the *kids* you helped too! And thank you for using your internet power for good, not evil. :)

You ladies have beautiful souls, and I will keep you in my prayers.

  14. You guys have made me ugly cry.

I hope you and your family have a WONDERFUL Christmas holiday. I know because of you my daughter will.

  15. I love you Hookers. And Guru Louise. Thank you for making my holidays brighter by allowing me to help.

  16. Thanks for the tears. It meant so much to me to be helped. My kids get Christmas thanks to Helping Hookers like Kris K. in OK.

  17. Thank you for the incredible opportunity to spread a little holiday cheer and hang a little tinsel on the tree for someone who might have looked at Christmas as a very stressful time. My sister and brother in law have really hit hard times this year and they have 4 children. Talking to my sis was heartbreaking because I knew the ability to provide Christmas gifts to their children was weighing on them heavily, and to not be able to give Christmas to your children is probably one of the worst feelings in the world. It starts to make you angry at the world for being so unfair to you.

The economy has hit them HARD. My sis works full time and goes to school in the evening, while my brother in law takes every job he can just to try to make ends meet. He has a college degree and is a master at his craft, but can't get hired in for anything. He's been on 100's of interviews, but 100's are applying for the same jobs at the same time. It's just awful because only a short time ago they were doing great.

I knew I couldn't help them even 1/2 as much as they needed so I sent them into the two of you, and threw my name in the pot as a "giver" so I could at least send a little something to someone who needed it too. My sister had no idea I did it. One night she called me and said "So, tomorrow is Avery's birthday (that's her oldest daughter) and I was so upset because we just didn't know how we were going to be able to get her a gift. Then I got this card in the mail and it had a Target gift card in it. I wasn't even sure if I should try to use it because I thought it could be a joke, but their was a balance on it. Do you know why I got this?" I said "yeah, I do." She burst into tears. She said, "Mandy, this has turned out to be the best day ever and you don't know how much this means to me." As the week progressed she got another gift card in the mail and cried again. Christmas got much brighter! Their moods changed from black and angry to a lighter shade of gray with a hint of happiness. The economical issues are still weighing heavily, but at least their children don't have to be a part of that with them.

I hope my gift brought the same moment of happiness for someone else. It's not meant to solve all their financial issues, but it feels great to throw a little of someone else's weight onto my shoulders and give them a little rest. Happy Holidays everyone!

  18. I'm mailing my gift card out today! I know it's a little late, but sick kids, sick hubby, and sick me, did not make for an easy time getting to the post office LOL.

  22. Thanks, Hookers. You did a good thing. A great thing, actually. I still have no idea whether my hooker received her GC, but I pray she did and that it made her family holiday a little brighter. I know many folks would prefer to remain anonymous, and I totally get that, so I am trusting that it got there! PEACE

  23. I sent my gift card out and I hope a little mama in Nebraska has a beautiful Christmas because I know she made my heart feel ten times larger this Christmas.

I love you ladies! You did so much for so many mamas! You are angels in disguise. ;)

  24. Got my name on Saturday. Sent a Walmart gift card off to my hooker in Arizona - all done over the internet! From Canada! Amazing.

Hope she gets it in time for Christmas! Sending many best wishes to you all from the snowy north!

  27. I wish I would have known about this before it closed! I am an unemployed single mother of 3 and had to rely on the salvation army for help for my children's Christmas.. I just saw this today since I haven't really been online due to a stomach virus that attacked all of my kids and myself. Thank you for all the good that you did though! I am a part of the center for women and families in my state and I am constantly talking about helping others. The center for women and families helps abused women get back on their feet and I have been involved with them for 4 years now. It's a struggle trying to get back on my feet and heal from all the damage that my ex husband has done to me and my children. Next year if I am still in this position I will definitely be looking for this program to sign up for. Thank you for helping other mothers like me! It is AMAZING what you have done for these other people!!

  29. Is it wrong that my nine year old daughter now wants to be a hooker? She saw me reading your message (and crying) and wanted to know what was going in. When I explained about the hooker project and how amazingly awesome it was-she declared "I want to be a hooker too!". We missed out in participating with you hookers, so we're working with a local outreach center locally to bring some of that Helping Hooker love to our area. God, let's hope she doesn't go into school and tell everyone she wants to be a hooker for Christmas!

  30. This girl, Erin DeRosa, in PA, got my gift cards!!!!!! I got hit 4 times. My three little girls now have dolls, and games, to unwrap under the tree. I even got a gas card for my cr, and dunkin donuts!! Thank you all you amazing hookers out there. My Christmas went from being pretty dismal to pretty damn glorious. My little girls thank you so much. So do my husband and I. Thank you thank you, thank you!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  33. I got a $25 gift card in the mail today. Thank you Julie Kelly. I will go to Target and see what I can find for my 4 kiddos. It is going to be a difficult Christmas without my husband this year, but I know he is looking down on us, and you and smiling. Julie, Kate and Lydia, I can't even begin to thank you enough. The gift card is a true blessing, but the best blessing is knowing that someone is praying for me and helping me, and you don't even know me. God Bless all of you! I hope you have the best Christmas ever!!!!

  35. It's really sad that someone lied...I hope that karma bites them in the butt! It sucks that they took away from someone who really did need the help. As someone who received help this year (and I have NEVER) asked for help, I am so grateful. My kids' grandparents did end up buying them something as well, but I was so excited to be able to buy them something from Mommy and Daddy for under the tree! Thanks again to everyone--Kate and Lydia, I loved your video! You guys are gaining some major "good hooker" points :-) Thanks again to my hooker angel in PA. :-)

  36. This experiment was just so freaking awesome. I wish that i could have been a helping hooker, but we are barely scraping by ourselves...not so bad that we needed help, but not so good either that i could help someone else.
Please don't let that one (or more) person who lied to you get you down. You are always going to find people like that, no matter where you look.
I am really hoping that you two wonderful, gorgeous hookers are going to do this again next year. You really have no idea just how amazing you both are.
Have a very MERRY CHRISTMAS and a wonderful and Happy New Year!!!!
I <3 you ladies and i am off to go stalk...i mean read...your facebook page.

  39. OH how cute are you two. For reals. You GUYS I am all warm and fuzzy from being a part of this (and possibly from having a lunch cocktail celebrating my daughter's daily nap...). No sense wishing ill to any who took advantage. Let's raise a glass (WOOOOHOOOOOO another round!) to those who made like Linus in the spotlight and showed the world what Christmas is all about.

  42. In a season of craziness, stress and commercialism you ladies gave us in mommyland a concrete example of the true spirit of Christmas. Thank you for giving me the opportunity to help a mom who really needed it this Christmas. I hope her card got to her quickly and safely and helped to ease her Christmas stress. I got so much out of it too. This is one of the reasons that I think this will be the best Christmas yet!

I just want to let you all know that I am totally gob-smacked by the generosity of strangers. Thank you, thank you, thank you to my 2 (!) helping hookers and to the three of you ranting in Mommyland. I am still in awe of the whole thing and I'm still not telling my spouse. Lego aisle, here I come.

  44. I really hope you do this again next year. I would have loved to participate but I lost my job in August. Thankfully, my husband still has a good job and we are able to give our kids a decent Christmas, but things are still tight.

I hope Tara finds out what she inspired.

  45. Thanks for letting us do this, Kate and Lydia. You both rock, and Guru Louise rocks, and all the Helping Hookers rock and to the mommies who needed our help this year, I'm praying that things get better.

    ReplyDelete
  46. This was really an amazing experiment and it shows just how much of a difference moms make in the world, even if we are just a bunch of hookers.
Sucks that someone lied, and I am kind of curious as to how you found out - Did they confess after having some sort of Ghosts of Christmas epiphany? Did someone rat them out? Seems like there might be a good back story there.

  47. I received my Walmart gift card today from my fabulous hooker!!! Thank you, thank you, thank you to Kelly S.! <3 You will be in my prayers always!

  48. The words that I feel in my heart might not come out right, but I'm really gonna try. You three (Kate, Lydia, and Guru Louise) are so beautiful inside and out. I am so thankful to have gotten to try to help mommies in need. I am rather disappointed, I don't think Natalie in Nampa acctually got my giftcard from Walmart. However, the idea that I was able to try to help felt so good! If it weren't for my parents my son would not have a Christmas, but because I am blessed to have parents that love me and my son, we are ok. I hope that one of my attempts to help a mommy will get where it is supposed to go. Thank you Kate, Lydia, and Guru Louise! Thank you so much!

    ReplyDelete
  49. I'm not sure if she saw my last post, but to Jessica in SC, you wonderful hooker you, thank you! Because of your $20 gift card, my daughter will have a doll to unwrap at christmas! She's almost 2, and just starting to get into dolls, and she's going to love it! You don't know how much your selfless act means to myself, and my daughter! Thank you from the bottom of my formerly-grinchy-heart!
It sucks that someone lied.....it boggles my mind that someone could have taken away from a needy mother for the love of Maude, and I hope karma has her way with that person. Seriously, for shame.
Kate and Lydia....bless you both. Hookers with hearts of gold, ya'll. Seriously. Much love to you, and to all the mommas on here, needers and givers alike. We're united with the love (and occasional frustration) of our smalls. Happy holidays to all of you!

  51. I'm curious about how you found out, too...is there a way to tell the story without sharing too much information?

  52. I love the fact that you two taped your video in what looks like your church library!

  53. I got am email directly from someone who read my name and email in the comments section here. It was a plea for her daughter in law and I just was not comfortable responding to that. How do I know they did not appeal to everyone who volunteered to help more? Did this happen to anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  54. I hope that that person was honestly just trying to get someone to help. Like with this whole experiment, there's no way to know whether they are telling the truth or not. I can understand not feeling comfortable. :-( Sometimes people just make not-so-great choices, especially if they feel there is no ther option.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Thank you both for the gift of giving! I too, the eternal procrastinator sent out my giftcard on Friday. According the Target's website, Kelly in MD is supposed to get it today. Happy Holidays, Hooker! I hope it is a fabulous one for you all <3

    THANK YOU!
My daughter and I got our gifts today from our "hooker elf" in New Jersey and I was so overwhelmed, I started crying! (which is huge for me, I'm prior Army, I don't cry LOL) Thank you so much for everything you all have done for us, you truly have made our Christmas so much better than I thought it would be. I didn't have money to buy my daughter any christmas presents this year, so the gift card I got from my match was a true blessing because now she'll have some presents under the tree (oh lord, I'm crying again LOL) and I couldn't be happier! You are all amazing people and I'm so thankful!

    Happy Holidays everyone!
    Sincerely,
Lindsey and Julia in Peoria, Arizona

  57. Okay...so, one gift card from you mommies made me incredibly happy. Two, as it turns out, makes me ugly cry. I got a second gift card today....I can't believe the love and generosity of you mommies. For serious. Crying again, dammit.
Elyse in OH, thank you from the bottom of my heart, and spleen, even ovaries. My daughter, Molly, would thank you too, but her current favorite word is "shit" (mommy has to work on her language now that small ears are listening and a small mouth can parrot). You are a fabulous person and you've made our christmas much better. Thank you so much for your generous gift! You mommies.......I don't even have words.
    Thank you.
