Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures

UPDATE: Commenting for the give-away is now closed. WINNERS ARE BELOW.

Do you guys know about the blog Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures? It's so awesome and hilarious. It's written by a woman named Amber Dusick who is incredibly sweet and nice. We've exchanged like 6 emails so I can say that with total confidence and authority.

She was also the last blogger to win a certain bad ass award called the Parent's Magazine Funniest Blog of the Year. So when I won it this year, I reached out to her to ask her some stuff and ending up being all weird and like:  "BY THE SECRET CODE OF BLOGGING YOU MUST NOW GIVE ME THE AMULET."

So a couple of weeks ago, her publishing company emailed me and asked if I would review her book. I was like "Oh even yesser!" and I did. My review is right here. You can check out the book on Amazon right here.

Then they sent me 5 books to give away and I was like "YIPPEEE!!" because the book is so funny and sweet and wonderful. You guys will love it. You know I don't usually do reviews or give aways, but this is special. First of all it's books. Second, it's another blogger getting to write a book and live her dream and who wouldn't want to help with that?

Want to win it? I'd love to send these books to folks who are fans of the blog. Leave a comment below telling me your favorite crappy blog post from Parenting: Illustrated with Crappy Pictures and I'll pick five tomorrow night. You can just say something like "the one where she goes to Target and ends up buying curtains" or "the one where everyone throws up on her",  I'll know what you're talking about.

xo, Lydia

PS: I think maybe possibly next week - maybe Monday? - I'm going to be guest posting on Momastery. I have no idea if it's really going to happen but I think so. I'm so excited because you know that Glennon has been my Yoprah (Yoda/Oprah) since before she was famous and I love everything about that blog. So if it happens, I will be spending that day hiding in my bathroom trying not to throw up and being too scared to read the comments.

  1. I love love love crappy pictures!!!! I have so many that I enjoy. I like Crappy Baby when he gets into things and makes "sticks and glue." I also like when crappy Boy teaches his friend how to get over the wall. I also like the "window for sex" that Crappy Papa always thinks is larger than it is... That sentence didnt make sense, but I love Amber's blog (and this one too).

  2. Marvelous :-D I laughed out loud at her Blog site .... my fave has got to be PET ANNOYANCE.... I can relate to that as I have always had them and when my daughter was born, some of that happened LoL

  3. I'm going to go with the Toddler Diaper Changes....because it's so completely accurate, and hilarious. I've never heard of her blog before, but it is now permanently added to my must read list!

    ReplyDelete
  4. I love the how to sleep (not) at night!

    :)

  5. Definitely the Target one, my fave because its so true! Oh and the eating at nice restaurants, that was my family yesterday. :/ thanks for the giveaway! Jlcjewels @ hotmail dot com

  6. I love Crappy Pictures! I'll be all hipster and say I've been reading it since before it was cool, although I'm pretty sure it's been cool from the start. Anyway, my favorite post is probably the one where there's a hugemongous spider under the lawn chair. Or something like that. I've had a couple kids since then so my memory is a bit fried.

    ReplyDelete
  7. Public toilets! Soo gross & spot on!

    ReplyDelete
  8. The one where she goes to the doctor's office and her son licks the bench.

    ReplyDelete
  9. Yesssss! Me me me me! I love all her posts but my favorite would probably be when she answers the door for the penis man/pizza man! And seeing as how I live .5mi from a Target, I have to avoid that hypnotizing bullseye on a daily basis or else it's a $100 shopping trip every. single. time.

    ReplyDelete
  10. How can we possibly choose just one?? I like the ones about cleaning and laundry. Oh who am I kidding, I love them all!

    ReplyDelete
  11. The Target one, hands down. It's a relief to know that I'm not the only one to be drawn into the clutches of The Eye! ;)

    ReplyDelete
  12. Coffee and Wine - because they are totally my secret-weapons for being an awesome, er, a reasonably decent parent too!

    ReplyDelete
  13. ALL OF THEM! I love love love her blog. I especially like the one where she's driving and swears---tells her child she said "Oh dear", aaaaaannnndddd, the child corrects her lol. I can relate.
YAY YOU!! On Momastery!! Also one of my favorite blogs. Can't waIt!!

    ReplyDelete
  14. I love the post about sleeping....where the husband sleepa all night and the mom is up 800000 times. Ya so true.
    Would love this book :)

    ReplyDelete
  15. I LOVE Crappy Pictures! I've always felt a sort of special bond with Amber (even though she doesn't know I exist...is that weird?) because our kids are the exact same ages. I can't tell you how many times I have read one of her posts and thought, "She could have been writing about MY life!" One of my favorite posts (I have many) is "birthday cakes and brilliant ideas". Making the first child's first cake from scratch with all organic, non-allergenic ingredients? Yep, that was me. The making of the 3rd birthday cake while ridiculously pregnant? Yep...well, almost. I actually had been home from the hospital for 2 days and had a 4 day old newborn, but, close enough. The cake HAD TO BE MADE!! :)

    ReplyDelete
  16. The one about changing toddler diapers! That one is exactly my life.
In fact, I just fished my stinky toddler out from under the coffee table this morning!

    ReplyDelete
  17. My favorite of all time is the Target one! I have looked into that bullseye every week for the last 5 years since I've had kids. But I love everything else she writes about, too.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Her story about the two side-by-side playgrounds with the wall in between and the one about Target are my favorites.

    ReplyDelete
  19. The Parenting- I Quit is the funniest, most honest account of parenting as it relates to my experience. I was laughing, and crying and feeling better about my crappy weekend! Because we work all week at a crappy job to then have two days off to work some more appeasing a 4 and 6 year old 24/7 for the ENTIRE WEEKEND. Sometimes all I want to do is QUIT! But we love them, right???

  20. Oh god my comment was eaten by the machine!? I'll try again... I have many favorite posts. I liked her vacation ones from recently, and also the crappy baby talking about nicknames and poop. I also liked her post about living in LA and driving by the scene of a robbery/shooting.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I love them all!!! But I think my fav is the knife fight one!

    ReplyDelete
  22. The one about eating at nice restaurants, hands down! I do love the Target one, too!

    ReplyDelete
  23. I love her blog! I think the one about playgrounds is probably my favorite, but it's really hard to pick just one favorite.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I just spent my morning reading 11 pages of her blog- how had I never heard of this!? I loved the one where her son got sick at a birthday party because it happened to me too- almost exactly!

    ReplyDelete
  25. Definitely the one where everyone in her house gets sick - just experienced that this past weekend!

    ReplyDelete
  26. Just because I was talking about the same subject with my sibs this weekend, what she did as a kid that her kids will never do. Love this blog (and yours too, of course)!

    ReplyDelete
  27. My favourite is the one where she and the kids all get a stomach bug, but when crappy papa comes down with it he concludes that it must be a mutated strain of the virus because there's no way she could have been that sick and still take care of the kids. I refer back to it every time my husband comes down with a case of the man-cold ;)

    ReplyDelete
  28. One of my favorites is the toddler hallucination theory! It explains so many things.

    ReplyDelete
  29. I love Crappy Pictures! My favorite has to be the Public Toilets. So nasty, yet so accurate.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Although the one about Target describes my entire life, I think my favorite is the one where she describes to Crappy Boy what Fortunate means.

    ReplyDelete
  31. Honestly, it's the most recent man poop post one because we're trying (and failing) to get our two year old boy interested in potty training. It's not going well. He'd rather man poop in a diaper.

    ReplyDelete
  32. hands down the house tour. it reminds me of how desperate I used to be to clean up before my MIL would come over BEFORE I had kids and how now I really could give a crap. there's no way to repair to damage done; can't put the PB and jelly back in the jar, can't possibly remove all the is sticky from the walls and banisters. My husband now feels like he has to do it. Poor man.

    ReplyDelete
  33. The one where where they make lemonade- seems like something my husband and I would do!

    ReplyDelete
  34. PENIS PIZZA!!! HA HA HA!! The bestest.

    ReplyDelete
  35. My favorite is the one about the cats, that got all the mean comments. How she looooved her cats and never thought they would annoy her, but then she had kids. I have three cats and a toddler. Before my toddler, my cats got hours of attention. Now, they do like the crappy cats do, and come into my toddler's room and meow real loud just as sleep is about to come...

    ReplyDelete
  36. I LOVE that blog!!!
My favorite is the one that shows what it's like to (not) sleep at night!

    ReplyDelete
  37. A REAL house tour! No one has those perfect beautiful put together homes with kids...it's just NOT happening! I refuse to believe it!

    ReplyDelete
  38. I love her post on how she does laundry and that is why she hates it. LOL!! We are kindred spirits!

    ReplyDelete
  39. The one where Crappy Cat has Poop Rockets!!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  40. My husband and I totally adopted her "windows" code.

    ReplyDelete
  41. Oh, I think my favorite still has to be the one about picking movies with your husband (and why you, thus, never actually watch any!). It's us to a "t"! Of course, there are a bunch of others!

    ReplyDelete
  42. I'll admit I haven't read a bunch but I really like her one about cloth diapering. I found it doing cloth research and (much like you guys) its funny, honest and a real opinion. (v. something like OMG cloth diapers are so ecologically friendly! or I would never let my baby touch the harmful chemicals in those awful disposable pieces of trash!)

    ReplyDelete
  43. My favorite is the one where she has just finished her book, and is in her office doing some work for it. She hears the kids planning a party and thinks it's for her book, and it turns out that the party is for the dog's (not) birthday.

    ReplyDelete
  44. OMG the well-child visit at the pediatrician. It's the only place I am a complete germophobe. Ack - just reading that post makes my skin crawl!!

    ReplyDelete
  45. By far it is the one where everyone throws up on her!!

    ReplyDelete
  46. I love the crappy pictures blog! It's hard to pick 1 favorite, but the one where she talks about cloth diapers is up there on my list of favorites, along with taking her kids to the park. Really, I love all of her posts because it seems like she is blogging about my life with my kids. :)

    ReplyDelete
  47. My favourite is both boys and her get sick, then Crappy Dad gets a mutated version of it!

    ReplyDelete
  48. well up until 5 minutes ago, diaper changing was my favorite, but I just read penis Pizza and am now crying at my desk trying to hold my laughter in at work!

    ReplyDelete
  49. My favorite blog post is when Crappy Baby gets sick at the birthday party. It's absolutely hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  50. My favourite was the one where she posted a picture of what she'd LIKE to say to her kids versus what she actually says. I could totally relate! :D

    ReplyDelete
  51. I love the one where Amber describes a typical night of not sleeping...then her husband wakes up and says, "I'm so tired."

Love her blog! Can't wait to read the book!

    ReplyDelete
  52. The one where her kids keep interrupting her in the bathroom - in fact that whole 'series!'

    ReplyDelete
  53. I love the post about pets before and after kids. I have forwarded it to so many people I've lost track.

    ReplyDelete
  54. I love the one where there was a spider under the chair and she takes off with the kids in tow and locks crappy papa out of the house because she was afraid the spider would get in. That one was so funny and I loved it. I hate spiders and always have to make sure I get a shoe and smash them because I don't want them running loose.

    ReplyDelete
  55. My favorite post is the one about the car seat demon. Suddenly, I had flashbacks of my own children doing this and a light bulb went off - they were seeing imaginary demons, of course! I laughed until I almost cried.

    ReplyDelete
  56. My favorite is when she is putting the babies toys away in bins and he comes right after and dumps them out. She says he must think "look mommy is playing with my toys, I will play too". Either that or he's being a complete dick.
    LOL

    ReplyDelete
  57. Crappy pictures has gotten me through my middle of the night feeds with a smile on my face and silent belly laughter, (can't wake the baby, you know?!)

My favorite post is what it is like to (not) sleep at night. Sigh... it's so true.

    ReplyDelete
  58. I love the crappy pictures adventure of the fisher price dog who won't shut up from the backseat of the car!!

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think mine has to be the monkeys at the zoo, where biology gets interesting for the kids.

    ReplyDelete
  60. getting no sleep - baby turns into a starfish. When I first read it i laughed with sympathy, we co-slept with our first, who is now 5, but had only one. and no cats. but I just revisited it again and oh my, have our second coming in a month, we will be living it for sure. I think she is THE funniest writer about kids there is!

    ReplyDelete
  61. Could not stop laughing after reading the one where they go out to dinner with extended family bc it perfectly reflects the disasters that occur when we take the kids out to eat. Crappy Dad couldn't have played a better role of my husband LOL

    ReplyDelete
  62. Picking just one favorite is sooooo hard. I really love The Trouble with Nicknames. Oh, man. Hilarious.

    ReplyDelete
  63. Penis Pizza!!

and the fortunate one. what it means to be fortunate.

    ReplyDelete
  64. the car show with the jedi... Love it!

    ReplyDelete
  65. The one about the pizza man and the penis. Hi-larious!

    ReplyDelete
  66. The car show. I love that one because it is nearly identical to what happened with my kids every time we tried to go anywhere! :)

    ReplyDelete
  67. One of her originals -- her sleeping vs. her husband sleeping and what happens throughout the night. The baby starfish and the cats haunting her also happen in my house!!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I read this.... instead of doing my homework while the children run screaming and crying around me. Except the baby isn't even crawling yet, so just the screaming and crying applies to him. I digress..... So, I read this EVERYDAY. I look even if a new blog hasn't shown up in my facebook feed, and in that case, I'm sad. But it's hard to choose a favorite because there are so many I feel like relate to me. Highest on my list is probably the sick blog, as in crappy dad says it's a more mutated form and he's dying. My SO says that to me EVERY FREAKING TIME! Or maybe the knife fight/stabbing blog, just because. No, nuts, my favorite is where she quits being a mom and yells back at her kids they are being little shits! I love this blog.

    ReplyDelete
  69. I love Crappy Pictures blog and would love the book. Her blog is so funny it's hard to pick on, but the Penis Pizza prolly makes me laugh the most.

    ReplyDelete
  70. I LOVE the toddler hallucinations (car seat) one. That single post helped me prove to my husband that our boys are not the abosolute worst children ever born to date (which was his honest opinion up to that time). :)

    ReplyDelete
  71. I love the one where she is trying to get out of the Spanx! :)

    ReplyDelete
  72. I love the one where she talks about getting cloth diaper fluffy mail. It was nice to see I'm not the only one obsessed with buying CDs. It was the first post of hers that I read and I was hooked from then on!

    ReplyDelete
  73. I love all of her stories, but Penis Pizza was one of my favorites. :)

    ReplyDelete
  74. Its a tie, the one where the car seat is a toddler eating monster, and the one at the restaurant when she's shooting fiery darts with her eyes at the back of her husband's head

    ReplyDelete
  75. The Target one, and the one where a spider is under her lounge chair.

    ReplyDelete
  76. love this blog and would love to win her book! my faves are the target one, how she does laundry, things she did as a kid that her kids won't.

    ReplyDelete
  77. My favorite post is the one where everyone gets sick, not sure if that's what it's called though...

    ReplyDelete
  78. the one where crappy baby is helping her clean up by pulling everything out and she says he must be helping, otherwise he is just a d1ck.

    ReplyDelete
  79. The one with the Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy toy gets me every time!

    ReplyDelete
  80. Oh my, it's really hard because so many of them have made me laugh-until-I-cry. Recently, I really loved the one about the Number Two because it's so like my little boy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. The time everyone got sick. It's so familiar!

    ReplyDelete
  82. I totally love all her posts, but if I had to pick one off the top of my head at this moment, it would be the one about the spider under her lawn chair...LOVE IT! ...and it would be really cool to win a copy since my children suck my finances dry & I can't get one just yet...and I never win anything either, LOL. ;o) Just sayin'...

    ReplyDelete
  83. cleaning with a toddler in the room is an all time favorite. When i first found crappy parenting and read through the archives i laughed until i cried and got a belly ache. Seriously.

    ReplyDelete
  84. My favorite is when she goes to the doctor and tries to stop the kids from touching anything because GERMS! but crappy baby licks the arm of a chair.
I would love her book. I've been lusting after it. Lusting, people.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Love the blog!! I think my favorite (so far) is the one where her son informs her that mermaids aren't real. That or the one where they get a spider instead of a rat. :)

    ReplyDelete
  86. I will always love the target one because it's the one that brought me to her blog but there are far too many to pick a real favorite. The one about boogers on the wall maybe?

    ReplyDelete
  87. Her husband finding the black widow spider underneath her lounge chair while she was in it. :3

    ReplyDelete
  88. My most recent favorite one is the Lemonade one ;)

    ReplyDelete
  89. I love love love looooove Amber's blog. My favorite one is of her co-sleeping with crappy baby, and crappy baby totally morphs into a starfish at some point. So funny and cute! I think that is the one that got me hooked, and then I had to back track and read all of them and have been reading every single one since. If we had the funds, I would totally buy her book and support her awesome blog, but we don't right now. Please please pick me! And thanks so much for this generous giveaway. :)

  90. Yesssss - love Crappy Pictures! My fave? Definitely "what it's like to (not) sleep at night - tears streaming down my face hilarious! Add a three year old in the mix & it's my night to a T. I made my husband read it & (because he thinks he's soooo hilarious) the first words out of his mouth the next morning were, "I'm SO tired". Not funny, hubs. Not funny. That post however, super funny.

    ReplyDelete
  91. The first Crappy Pictures post i ever read was the one about co-sleeping. I laughed until i cried and have been a regular visitor to her site ever since.

    ReplyDelete
  92. too many that i love but right off the bat: FARKLES! and "put your pants on!" both jump into my head right now.

    ReplyDelete
  93. This comment has been removed by the author.

    ReplyDelete
  94. blind spots/ lemonade. I cannot even think about it without laughing.

    ReplyDelete
  95. I like the one about the well child check-ups.

    ReplyDelete
  96. My favorite is "public toilets vs newly potty trained girls and boys" where she thinks her friend has it easy potting training a girl, until she takes the girl to a public restroom, and the little girl's panties fall on the nasty floor.

    ReplyDelete
  97. My favorite is when one of the crappy kids asks if she has a baby in her belly but alas it's just a burrito!!!!!

    ReplyDelete
  98. I love all of Amber Dusick's postings, especially the one about the scary/grody public toilets and toddlers. My 6 year old is still terrified of loud flushing public toilets. I also love the one about the parks, where she can't keep a close eye on both kids at once and there is dangerous water! So true!!

    ReplyDelete
  99. I love the one where they all get sick, but Crappy Papa comes down with a much stronger mutated version of the flu she had all week while taking care of two sick babies. lol It reminds me EXACTLY of my husband.

    ReplyDelete
  100. I like reactions to pregnancy announcements, because that's exactly the procedure i go through now.

    mollilindquist at gmail dot com

    ReplyDelete
  101. Definitely the sex window with Crappy Papa

    ReplyDelete
  102. I love the target one and the public toilet one and the annoying cats one and the birthday party ones.

That's way too many, but I can't pick.

    ReplyDelete
  103. One of my recent faves of hers is the window of opportunity with crappy dad. Haha, my husband is the same way!

    ReplyDelete
  104. My favorite one is when she is chasing after her toddler to change his diaper.

    ReplyDelete
  105. my favorite (if you are making me choose. they're all so good.) is the one where they go to the park. and then, among other things, Crappy Boy decides to play hide-and-seek where Crappy Mama is it, but doesn't know. so she thinks she's lost a child.

    csa1@sympatico.ca

    ReplyDelete
  106. I'm fairly new to the Crappy Pictures blog, but I absolutely love it! I especially love the names...crappy mommy, crappy baby, etc. It's definitely how I feel sometimes. LOL I think my favorite so far is the cleaning with a toddler post or the toddler hallucination post.

    ReplyDelete
  107. I love the learning to love books post - we are currently at stage 5 :)

    ReplyDelete
  108. My favorite, which I quote all the time to friends (and they look at me like I'm crazy) is the post she did about her husband trying to have a quickie, which they call a "window" in front of the kids. It has me laughing out loud.
    Cristi Brown (sunkist4560@yahoo.com)

  109. I love the cloth diaper posts. The one about toddler diaper changes is a favorite. Most days I feel like she and I are living parallel lives.

    ReplyDelete
  110. I feel like she's me, but cleverer! I love the one about not sleeping at night and the husband wakes up "so tired".

    ReplyDelete
  111. The (not) sleeping at night post!

    ReplyDelete
  112. I love love the one about being thrown up on! I too have been a human vomitorium. 5 times in one day by two hysterical children crying and clambering to be in my lap with the puke. Thank you flu.

    ReplyDelete
  113. I love the Parenting...I quit post. The for toys (yay wooden toys) cracks me up. But really, as a mother of three boys, 2-6, all her jokes make me laugh.

    ReplyDelete
  114. The one that got me hooked was what it's like to (not) sleep at night.

    ReplyDelete
  115. The one with the peaches passesway (secret passageway)!

    ReplyDelete
  116. I love that blog! The toddler diaper change one is pretty funny!

    ReplyDelete
  117. I absolutely love her "while mom was in the bathroom" series! She's such a great blogger!

    ReplyDelete
  118. I love the one where she put all the crap she'd love to tell her kids, cuz I think that kind of stuff ALL THE TIME!

    ReplyDelete
  119. I love the one where they order pizza and the kids are yelling penis in the background. I have a son who is all about his penis so I can relate!

    ReplyDelete
  120. I don't know how anyone can pick just one favorite. I'll go with the post about things she (we) did as a kid but her kids won’t.

    ronaleeduncan{at}aol{dot}com

    ReplyDelete
  121. I love the one where she takes them to the playground with the big wall in the middle so she can't see anything and the pond on one side that Crappy Baby keeps trying to jump into. Lovelovelovelove it:)

    ReplyDelete
  122. I really like the I DID THESE THINGS AS A KID (BUT MY KIDS WON’T) post. Probably because I find myself thinking about that a lot lately.

    ReplyDelete
  123. Crappy Pictures is hilarious! I know I will have a good laugh each time I read her posts. I think my favorite blog post was the one where Crappy Baby kept throwing food on the floor and she kept getting angry. Then he does something cute so she completely forgives him.

    ReplyDelete
  124. Just started to read it because you talked about it. Has to be Penis Pizza. Hands down!

    ReplyDelete
  125. I love Crappy Pictures! One of the best is--toddlers in public bathrooms!! Amber takes a friend's girl to pee after mocking the mom for carrying around a potty seat--hysterical!

    ReplyDelete
  126. Hahah! I love her! My favorite story was the first one I ever read and it was about family vacation. I love how she described the directions to the place they were staying.

    ReplyDelete
  127. Dang, I commented on fb and not here. Oh well, better luck next time.

    ReplyDelete
  128. I'll take the book since it hasn't been claimed! I'd love it!
