Help Homeless Kids Have A Great Halloween!

Hi everyone!

My 12 year old daughter is doing a really great Girl Scout Silver Award project. She's been working for months on a Halloween party for the children at the Katherine K Hanley Family Shelter in Fairfax, VA. The kids will be able to "shop" for costumes for Halloween and she hopes to have enough left over to create a permanent dress-up/creative play area at the shelter. She did some research and found that creative play helps all kids develop and grow, but can be especially helpful for kids who have experienced trauma.

If you have any gently used costumes you would like to donate, please consider sending them to this awesome project.

If you live locally (around DC or Northern Virginia) and would like to volunteer at the event, that would AWESOME! Here's the sign-up genius to learn more:

  1. As a Girl Scout leader in IN I just have to say that I LOVE your daughter's idea! My troop is just about to bridge up to Cadette's and will be starting their silver award journey's soon! I'll be sharing her idea at our next meeting to help inspire them :-)

  2. Warm greetings from Montreal, Canada! This is a great idea and I hope that many people do this.

  3. What a fantastic project! Sadly I can't help out with it, but I know my Brownies, Guides & Rangers (spanning ages 7-20somethings) will all be as hugely impressed as I am. My Brownies have more than once voted to spend money on others (animals as well as humans) rather than themselves & the Guides & Rangers run lunches for the elderly of our Parish on a regular basis as well as undertaking all sorts of service projects. The Brownies & Rangers have also met with our MP to discuss issues they feel strongly about. I hope it is a huge success.

  4. During Halloween and Christmas we have found people are organizing different types of theme parties with attractive gifts and foods. But apart from parties sometimes they are also taking good steps to do social works; such as to help homeless kids for celebrating this festive season. Under this social work we have found that people are donating old clothes, foods and other helps to make their festival better. This is really a great thought which promotes social work.
