The Domestic Enemies Series

Welcome to the Domestic Enemies series! The point of these posts was (of course) to rant, but it was also to share a perspective that we maybe hadn't thought about before. I am a simple-minded creature who tries hard not to be a Judgey McJudgerson, and reading the rants of other moms actually taught me some stuff. It helped me be the kind of person who gets it. And that's the kind of person I want to be.

So now, if I see a little dude in Target having a melt down and flapping his hands - I smile at his mom and give her a thumbs up. Maybe her flappy guy is on the autism spectrum. If a friend tells me her kid has been diagnosed with ADHD, I'm not going to launch into some well-meaning soliloquy about how her kid is 100% fine and just needs to stop watching Sponge Bob. I will listen to her, and know that if her gut says there's something wrong - that there probably is.

Of course these rants were also supposed to be funny. And they are. But at least for us, they did more than make us laugh. They helped us understand other moms, so we could be better friends. And not accidentally be assholic and hurt someone's feelings because we didn't know any better.

These posts have been on hiatus for about a year. We love them so much, but we saw a very yucky trend starting. Every time we ran one - things got ugly in the comments section. And while we always want everyone to be honest, that just isn't what we're about. But by popular demand, we're going to try to bring the series back and see how it goes. If you'd like to submit a Domestic Enemies guest rant, please scroll to the bottom of the page for more information.

-Do You Want to Write a Domestic Enemies Rant? -
If you want to submit a Domestic Enemies Rant, here's what you need to know (sorry to sound so bidness-like and douchey) :

  • We prefer rants about enemies that have not already been covered in the series.
  • It can be a new aspect of something already covered (e.g. military life, pregnancy, special needs) as long as it's very different from the original post.
  • We promise to read your submission, but we can't promise to publish it.
  • Please send only completed submissions.
  • Word counts between 500-900 are great, but we're flexible.
  • It may take us a few days to get back to you.
  • It may be a few weeks before your post (if accepted) is published.
  • We really like posts that are funny, honest, and share your unique perspective on dealing with your own set of domestic enemies.
  • See our description at the top of this page for the reasons why we love this series. That's really what we're looking for in a post.
  • Please be prepared for some negativity in the comments section. These posts tend to bring out strong opinions. We will do out best to moderate and will delete anything abusive or assholish. But there probably will be critical comments and you should know that going in.
  • If you want to submit your post anonymously, that's totally cool with us.
Send your completed submissions to lydia.and.kate@gmail.com

Thank you & have a kick ass day!
